چکیده

Oculomotor disturbances commonly occur as manifestations of Graves’ Oohthalmomthv. We investieated the outcome of this disorderfollowing e&ernal-beam orbital radiotherapy. We conducted a prospective study on 15 patients to assess the extent of ophthalmopathy by clinical evaluation, and measurement of the amplitude of gaze and the thickness of the extraocular muscles on computed axial tomography (CAT-scan) before and after orbital radiotherapy. This paper reports the results of this study and the effects of radiotherapy on the extraocular muscles are discussed.

Myotendinous nerve endings in human infant and adult extraocular muscles.

Myotendinous nerve endings in extraocular muscles of some mammals consist exclusively of palisade nerve endings incorporated in myotendinous cylinders. There is evidence for a similar form in man, some doubt remains. The objectives of the present study were to examine the structure and distribution of nerve endings in extraocular muscles of infant and adult human material. Muscles from five inf...

Altered Protein Composition and Gene Expression in Strabismic Human Extraocular Muscles and Tendons

Purpose To determine whether structural protein composition and expression of key regulatory genes are altered in strabismic human extraocular muscles. Methods Samples from strabismic horizontal extraocular muscles were obtained during strabismus surgery and compared with normal muscles from organ donors. We used proteomics, standard and customized PCR arrays, and microarrays to identify chan...

The anatomy of the muscle insertion (scleromuscular junction) of the lateral and medial rectus muscle in humans.

PURPOSE To analyze the histologic features of the insertion of the medial and the lateral rectus muscles in humans. METHODS Postmortem study performed on 49 extraocular muscles from 21 subjects without known ocular disease. All muscles were obtained no longer than 8 hours after death, after consent for autopsy. Thirty-seven lateral recti muscles and 12 medial recti muscles were studied with l...

Fine structure of the receptors at the myotendinous junction of human extraocular muscles.

The myotendinous junction of the human extraocular muscles was studied by electron microscopy. Some peculiar receptorial structures have been found in the majority of the samples examined. These structures are very small and consist of 1) the terminal portion of one muscle fibre, 2) the tendon into which it inserts and 3), within the tendon, a rich nerve arborization, whose branches are always ...

Do palisade endings in extraocular muscles arise from neurons in the motor nuclei?

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to localize the cell bodies of palisade endings that are associated with the myotendinous junctions of the extraocular muscles. METHODS Rhesus monkeys received tract-tracer injections (tetramethylrhodamine dextran [TMR-DA] or choleratoxin subunit B [CTB]) into the oculomotor and trochlear nuclei, which contain the motoneurons of extraocular muscles. All e...
